We are all about beer and if you are two there is a big chance the Czechs will love you. Beer is a great topic for sparking up a conversation – everyone has their favourite and is open to give out recommendations.

Czechs drink more beer per capita than any other nation. The reason being the quality but lets be honest, also the price. Here are some of our favourite spots:

1.     Lokál

Multiple locations. You always get a great pour with these guys. Plzeň on tap and great Czech cuisine as well. The spot where Czechs go when they want to feel like it´s Sunday lunch at grandma´s

2.     Dva kouhouti

A real treat for beer lovers. Lots of different beers on tap with everchanging speciality beers. Great beer garden, always busy and fun. If you´re a sport fan, make sure to check if there are any football or hockey screening.

3.     U Kocoura

Your typical Czech pub with great beer and a cheerful tap master. Don´t forget to bring cash.

4.     Holešovická polepšovna

New hot spot with fun modern beers. We love their sours.

5.     Beer geek:

They have every beer ever. Either sit in or get some cans to go to take for a barbeque or dinner with friends.

6.     Vinohradský pivovar

Great food and craft beer in a lovely location. Great for birthday parties or business lunches.

7.     Hostivar

Unique brewery outside town located by Hostivařská přehrada. We recommend taking a walk around the lake and finish at Hostivar. Great event in the summer on their garden.

8.     U Pinkasů

Very traditional pub that will take you back in time.

Fun facts:

·       If you fancy one just ask for „pivo“.

·       Most Czech beers are lager-style. Very refreshing, light and crisp.

·       You can see people having a „small“ at their lunch break.

·       Beer can sometimes be cheaper than water in restaurants.

·       There are questions about beer in the Czech citizenship test. For example,

„Which town is the birthplace of Pilsner Urquel?

Beer tourism is definitely a thing. Visiting breweries in different towns can be a great way how to spend the weekend (Pilsners and Budwieser are a given but smaller ones such as Regent or Kácov can be as much fun)

How to beer:

Before you take your first sip make sure to clink your glasses with your friends. Say “na zdraví” and don´t forget to look the person in the eye otherwise they might get offended and jokily tell you off.

Put the coaster on the table so the server can put your beer on it.

Beer in typically served in a half liter glass. The glass is actually a bit taller to make room for the foam. A good pour means a nice thick layer of foam (Don´t worry the pub is not trying to rip you off, a nice creamy „pěna“ is desired).

Na zdraví!
